Europe’s medieval urban heritage is one of the continent’s most valuable cultural assets.  STMCity is a research network on Spatial Technologies and the Medieval City that aims to further our understanding and appreciation of urbanism in the European Middle Ages (CE500-1600) through the use and application of ‘spatial technologies’ such as Geographical Information Systems (GIS), virtual and 3D mapping software, survey and remote sensing technologies, and multimedia visualization tools.

The longer term aim of the project is to integrate these methodologies through studying a particular European medieval city, and identifying how spatial technologies can be developed (1) to help us to understand the social and cultural processes that shaped urban life in Europe during the Middle Ages, as well as (2) by providing a proven and robust system of integrating and managing the textual, material, and visual cultural legacies of medieval urbanism.
